Overcoming Adversity: Tulsi Eswaran
Tulsi Eswaran, a student facing economic hardship due to his parents’ separation, was compelled to seek employment. Raised by his mother, who works as a food service provider at marriage halls and other events, his interest in academics waned, leading to his discontinuation of school education. Upon encountering Tulsi during their fieldwork, the project team elucidated the advantages of enrolling in a Transit Centre. Encouraged by the team’s support, he was admitted to Class 10 at the Transit Centre run at Bhoovanathapuram Government School, Sivakasi, in Tamil Nadu, India, under a Hand in Hand Switzerland project in collaboration with JK Wonderland and Hand in Hand India.
Under the guidance of our teacher, Ms. Priya, Tulsi made significant strides in his academic performance. Although initially performing poorly in the first term examination, he diligently studied and improved, passing the first two subjects and subsequently excelling in all five subjects during the revision test, with his mother expressing her confidence in her son’s ability to perform well in his Class 10 board examination, based on his newfound dedication to studies and his remarkable progress. Tulsi’s journey with education thus reiterates the need for similar interventions to help every child live up to their true potential.
