Sabarivasan’s Journey Back to Education
K. Sabarivasan, hailing from a financially challenged family, made the difficult decision to halt his studies and seek employment during the COVID-19 pandemic to support his family. Forced by economic hardship, he left school during sixth grade and joined a two-wheeler repair shop in Chokkalingapuram, a village in the Sivakasi district of Tamil Nadu, India, as an assistant, earning a daily wage of INR 200.
Upon uncovering this issue during community social mobilisation meetings, the project team intervened by informing the owner of the two-wheeler repair shop about the violation of the ‘Child Labour Act.’ They emphasised the importance of education to Sabarivasan and his parents but faced resistance. However, through persistent group motivation efforts, they eventually persuaded the family to prioritise the child’s education. As a result, Sabarivasan and his parents agreed to enrol him in the alternative school programme called ‘Transit Centre’ at Thiyagarajapuram Government Modern High School under a Hand in Hand Switzerland project in collaboration with JK Wonderland and Hand in Hand India.
