Turning the Tide: Mr. Srinivasan’s Journey
Mr. Srinivasan, a farmer from Kuriyanur village in Tamil Nadu, India, faced dwindling crop yields. For years, the primary source of irrigation for his crops was a dug well, which turned inefficient due to cracks and silt accumulation, coupled with decreased groundwater levels. The well was no longer sufficient to support his farm’s needs. Srinivasan struggled with crop failures, debt, and the potential loss of his livelihood.
The timely intervention undertaken by Hand in Hand Switzerland in partnership with Audemars-Watkins Foundation, NABARD, and Hand in Hand India helped change his fortunes. The project, which focused on restoring traditional water sources to improve the water availability for irrigation, supported Srinivasan with INR 35,000 and guidance for his well renovation. The fund allowed him to repair the cracks, remove debris, and deepen the well, with water levels thereon rising steadily.
The renovation enabled Srinivasan to irrigate his farm effectively. Efficient techniques like drip irrigation were introduced, which he had learnt from the training sessions conducted. His production and income increased, allowing him to repay debts and invest in quality seeds, fertilisers, and farm equipment. This intervention rejuvenated his passion for farming, setting him on a path toward long-term success.
