Empowering Communities in Kratie, Cambodia: Mr. Khon Khay

Home Stories of Change Empowering Communities in Kratie, Cambodia: Mr. Khon Khay

Hand in Hand Cambodia, in partnership with Hand in Hand Switzerland and with funding support from the City of Geneva, launched a project in 2022 in Kratie, a province in Cambodia with high levels of poverty. The initiative utilised the Self-Help Group – Microfinance model for poverty alleviation, particularly focusing on women, by providing skill training, improving livelihoods, and enhancing market engagement. The project also raised awareness among community members on gender, health, and the environment.

While the primary beneficiaries are women, the project has positively impacted men as well. Khon Khay, a 38-year-old resident of Kratie with three children, has significantly benefitted. Having completed his primary education only up to ninth grade, he participated in training programmes organised by the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Fishery, and Forestry (PDAFF) and Hand in Hand Cambodia. These programmes equipped him with skills to improve his pig-raising business from 3 to 16 pigs for breeding. Through this, as well as the sale of vegetables, he generates an annual income of 2,875 CHF.

Khay also joined the Self-Help Group ‘Kosh Andeitty3,’ where he gained business knowledge in areas like team and financial management, enterprise development, and pig-raising techniques. He saved 530 CHF through the SHG and accessed loans to expand his vegetable and pig farms, totalling 1,549 CHF. This project has significantly improved his family’s financial well-being.
