Ms. Kavitha’s Path to Recovery
Hand in Hand Switzerland, in partnership with Lonza and Hand in Hand India, undertook a project that aimed to improve the health status of vulnerable communities by enhancing health awareness, providing primary health care services, supporting government health facilities with medical equipment, and providing essential materials to frontline sanitation workers.
Kavitha of Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, India, has extensive experience in solid waste management. Having developed chronic pain in her feet, she was unable to stand or sit at ease. On visiting the hospital, it was found that her pain was related to varicose veins, and she was therefore advised to undergo surgery. Considering the high cost of INR 100,000 for the procedure, multiple hospitals pointed out that to undergo the surgery at no cost, she required the support of the ‘Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.’
Visiting the Chengalpattu collector’s office coupled with the project team’s assistance, Kavitha was able to enrol in this scheme. Additionally, she attended the special medical camp organised by the project team in collaboration with PIMS hospital and was thereon referred to undergo surgery on one foot at the same hospital for free. Thus, with this timely intervention, Kavitha was able to regain confidence and independence to navigate through her day-to-day activities.
