Mari Lakshmi’s Path to a Brighter Future

Home Stories of Change Mari Lakshmi’s Path to a Brighter Future

Mari Lakshmi, a 12-year-old residing in Sivakasi, a place famous for the firecracker industry, was found as a child labourer working to alleviate her family’s financial struggles. Her mother, Bathirakkali, also toiled as a daily wage worker, while her father, Muthuraj, battled alcohol addiction, contributing to the family’s misery.

As part of the project undertaken by Hand in Hand Switzerland in collaboration with JYLAG Foundation, J K Wonderland, and Hand in Hand India, titled ‘Securing Young Lives from Flames,’ it was discovered by field workers during social mobilisation that Mari Lakshmi had dropped out of school, and through persistent group motivation involving elected representatives, local government officials, and community leaders, the importance of education was communicated to her and her parents. After several stages of persuasion, her family agreed to enrol Mari Lakshmi in the Anaiyur Non-Residential Special Training Centre and subsequently back into a government school. Presently, Mari Lakshmi is excelling academically and aspires to become a police officer, reflecting her newfound determination.
