In the remote villages of Kalvarayan Hills in Tamil Nadu, pregnant women didn’t have the luxury of a hospital. The nearest Public Health Centre was miles away with no roads or vehicles to carry them. This was before Hand in Hand India’s ‘Karuppu Vandi’ came to the rescue – bringing access to health care.

The ‘Karuppu Vandi’ project in association with HiH India’s Automobile CSR partner brought in an SUV that was turned into an ambulance. This was the only vehicle that could ply on these tough terrains! The project enabled safe institutional deliveries for women, brought doctors to doorsteps to conduct regular medical camps for women and ensured timely immunisation of children.

While the project attained its goal of providing access to healthcare, it also removed the taboo of the colour black being inauspicious!
